Daily Prompt: The Loss


He was dedicated and loyal, and he lovingly documented everything about her life that she would give him.  He kept notes and stories and photographs, and stood by her side for years, patiently waiting for her to give him a moment’s attention.

In exchange, she barely even noticed his existence.  He was treated like he was just a mere object in her life, not worthy of even a kiss or a kind word.

When the end came, it came swiftly, and from that very moment she was filled with grief and regret.  How she’d neglected him and taken his existence for granted!  She wished she could take everything back.  She wished she’d done more, nurtured him more, loved him more, kept him safe from harm.  But she couldn’t turn back time.  In that instant, he was gone forever.  He was just a pile of lifeless nothing.

Even Staples couldn’t bring him back to life again.  She bought a new one that day, and taped on it the following note, written in his honor:  “Don’t drop this one too, dammit!”
