She knew she would never see home again. She’d never again hear a bird sing, people laughing, or children playing. She’d never again experience a mere breath of fresh air.
She thought about the preciousness of life and all that supported it as she reached out to touch the holographic sphere slowly rotating above her head. Earth was a miracle — a priceless, hidden jewel in the universe.
The spaceship’s hull was damaged beyond repair, and the rest of the crew lay dead around her as the toxic Plutonian air crept into the cabin.
Wheezing, she pulled herself to a pen and scrawled on the floor, “May all beings on Earth understand and cherish the precious gift they’ve been giv….” This last word trailed off.
