Melissa watched the clock, counting the seconds. “… three, two, one, NOW!” Melissa announced into her radio.

Adrenaline surged.  In acknowledgement, she heard machine gun fire followed by a storm of firefighting.  The top blew off of the turret as a bomb exploded.

One by one she saw them running out. “We lost one, the rest are free,” Mike panted through the radio. “I’m on my way back.”

“How about Sadie?”

“We got to her in time, she’s safe and alive.”

Melissa let out a sigh of relief, and sat back against a tree. She felt something jump on her lap and lick her, whining. Opening her eyes, she laughed, picking up the Papillion and kissed her. She rubbed her nose against the dog’s muzzle, “No more dog pound for you, you’re free!  My poor little baby girl, Sadie,” she cooed.
