Sometimes her mind would go off into flights of fancy. She would be 26 years old again and running. It would feel like she was gliding over the earth as her breath slowed. She would run and run and run for miles, through vineyards and trails, sometimes she could feel water lapping at her feet; she’d feel strong and at peace with everything in her world. The breeze would feel cool, and the sun magical and healing. Sometimes she would run naked, without a single bit of self-consciousness.
Then her mind would snap to reality. The nurses never noticed the trickle of a tear when that happened.

Thanks to mindlovemisery for hosting Tale Weaver #21 – Flight. This week we’re asked to write a piece based upon the given collage.

I have a sister with Alzheimer’s and I am fairly sure this poem captures her thoughts, at least those of a year or two ago. Unfortunately, no one could help but notice her tears. http://judydykstrabrown.com/2015/07/10/old-stories/

It’s very sad, but I’ve noticed an occasional tear from my mother, and I wonder what she’d been thinking. Old age is not for sissies.

Old age can be very sad, for the person and the ones around them. Sometimes when are at your weakest is when you have to have the most strength. Excellent post with insights of the old.

That was a beautiful place she ran to.

Well told story. I wish nurses observe and communicate their despair and sadness

My mother had descended into dementia before she died. Her sister died of Alzheimer’s. This makes me think of my aunt, and what might have become of my mother.
This is an achingly beautiful story.

Thanks for your contribution to the Tale weaver, I greatly appreciate you participating and this week you have added a very poignant tale. I agree with other comments old age both sucks and its hard work. I thought your post was beautifully written.
