I took the picture from the drawer. They looked like just some schoolboys, without a care in the world. “Did they grow up on the streets?” I wondered.
Every single one of these boys was gifted, though, specially chosen to study at a distinguished university. They all went on to be prestigious doctors, lawyers, and researchers.
… except one. He became an ordinary street cleaner.
Dad now gone, I put the photo in my wallet. I would find this man, thank him, and learn his story.
You see, 15 years after this photo was taken and three years before I was born, the quick thinking and courage of this seemingly insignificant person saved my father’s life in a freak river accident.

Thank you to Priceless Joy for sponsoring the flash fiction challenge, Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers, where we write a piece between 100 and 150 words (more or less 25 words) in length inspired by the photo prompt above. Everyone is invited to participate, just click on the blue froggie to add a link your piece.
Very nice and sentimental story.

I loved this story! Although he was the only one of the boys to be an ordinary “street cleaner” he saved a life and his life became even more significant. Loved the story!! :)

I agree with everyone. This is a great piece! I love how every single one of those lived on to save lives in their own way. How even the one who many might’ve counted out, (because he wasn’t living a prestigious life), was in the right place at the right time with the right skills and willpower to save the MC’s father’s life. <3

Very good summary of my piece! Thank you so much for reading it closely!! I also wanted to leave the reader with a sense that there is a great mystery surrounding this gifted person who chose to be a street cleaner. Why? I resolved it in the story by deciding to find out.

I love the way you turn the story of that one young man round towards the end. Though perhaps not gifted enough in the academic sense to work for the good of people, he showed his love of people by using his physical ability to save a life. Very nicely written.

A great story! Just because he wasn’t academically gifted (or chose not to follow an academic path, at least) doesn’t mean he was any less than his classmates – as he proved by saving a life. :) Really well done.
